Chet Baker - The Complete Tokyo Concert 1987 (2006) DVD9

This is a truly outstanding and long awaited release, as the present Japan concert is most certainly Chet's best filmed performance ever. Although the passage of the years is obviously noticeable in the trumpeter's face (evidencing his drug abuses and the constant turmoil in his life), he seems to be in good shape and mood here, and plays and sings beautifully backed by Harold Danko's wonderful piano. Nothing seems to fortell Baker's death, which would happen less than a year later.
The program includes both classic standards Chet has recorded in his earlier years, like the perennial "My Funny Valentine" or the opener "Stella By Starlight", some tunes by Baker's favorite jazz stars, obviously Miles Davis and a few tunes he had recently added to his repertoire, like Elvis Costello's "Almost Blue". All the way throughout, he displays his magic and the extraordinary sensibility that characterized him.
