Casting themselves as shock rockers is not the prime selling point of their music though, as they also exhibit technical skill on their instruments.

The camera angles give us special insight into how Jimmy Smith did the remarkable things he did. Watching his performance of The Sermon is indeed special. We are permitted to see the entire instrument. Watching his left hand walk the bass on the lower manual is to witness a technique he invented. When he begins the drone with his right thumb and begins to improvise with the remaining fingers, he gets fired up and deeply into the feeling. This is one great piece of jazz video.
He was a virtuoso soloist, an innovative combo leader, a best-selling recording artist and one of the four or five greatest jazz musicians of the last fifty years.

Suede - Coming Up (1996/2011) DVD5

Digitally remastered and expanded three disc (two CDs + NTSC/Region 0 DVD) edition of this 1996 album. Suede recruited 17-year-old guitarist Richard Oakes, following the departure of Bernard Butler. Oakes joined for the Dog Man Star tour, after which the band returned to the studio to record their third album. At this point they also enlisted keyboard player Neil Codling. The resulting album, issued in 1996, entered the album charts at 1 and spawned five Top Ten singles and is their biggest-selling album. This deluxe edition features the non-album b-sides as well as demos from the collections of Brett Anderson, Richard Oakes and Neil Codling. The DVD features the previously unreleased concert video Live At The Roundhouse featuring a guest appearance from Neil Tennant. Also featured is Suede In Paris, a newly-discovered full-length film of Richard Oakes' first ever concert with the band in October 1994. The bonus feature is a February 2011 interview with Brett, Richard and Neil about the making of the album, along with a short film put together by Simon Gilbert from his own contemporary camcorder footage.

McCoy Tyner - Live At The Warsaw Festival (2005) DVD5

This live, solo outing by Mccoy Tyner was recorded at the Warsaw Jazz Festival (aka Warsaw Jazz Jamboree) on October 27, 1991. Tyner branched out on his own in the late 1960's, leaving Coltrane to foray further into his extended free jazz explorations with wife Alice replacing Tyner at piano. However, although his prodigious style is well suited to it, Tyner wouldn't record a solo album until the famous and excellent Coltrane tribute, Echoes of Friend, released in 1972. Throughout the 70's, Tyner typically fronted larger bands, not returning to solo concerts until a string of Blue Note records from 1989 and 1990 (Revelations, Things Ain't What They Used to Be (also containing some duets), and Soliloquy). Unfortunately, those solo dates tend towards the sedate and balladic, at least compared to typical Tyner, whose style is, in the tradition of Oscar Peterson, expansive and billowing with thundering left-hand chords and break-neck right-hand runs, flourishes, and trills.

The career of Lou Reed defies capsule summarization. Like David Bowie (whom Reed directly inspired in many ways), he has made over his image many times, mutating from theatrical glam rocker to scary-looking junkie to avant-garde noiseman to straight rock & roller to your average guy. A firmer grasp of rock's earthier qualities has ensured a more consistent career path than Bowie's, particularly in his latter years. Yet his catalog is extremely inconsistent, in both quality and stylistic orientation. Liking one Lou Reed LP, or several, or all of the ones he did in a particular era, is no guarantee that you'll like all of them, or even most of them. Few would deny Reed's immense importance and considerable achievements, however. As has often been written, he expanded the vocabulary of rock & roll lyrics into the previously forbidden territory of kinky sex, drug use (and abuse), decadence, transvestites, homosexuality, and suicidal depression.
