Thecompilation Big Guns: The Very Best of Rory Gallagher is one of theways assembling a retrospective should be done. This set offers aportrait of a true guitar hero and songwriter, one whose flash neveroutweighed his substance, one whose work is so utterly and dazzlinglyfresh it not only stands the test of time, but transcends it. Being anIrish bluesman was tough for Gallagher, especially when he began hiscareer in the 1960s. When he passed away in 1995 at the age of 47, heleft behind 17 albums and a legacy of hard traditional blues and big,knotty blues-rock. These two discs are the first retrospective to spanthe entire length of his career, from his time with the power trio Tasteto his signature albums like Calling Card and Deuce, through to hisfinal acoustic album, Wheels Within Wheels (released posthumously).There are many gems here beginning with Born on the Wrong Side of Timeby Taste, and unreleased live versions of the traditional BullfrogBlues and Junior Wells Messin with the Kid. The stone killers arecuts that Gallaghers fans recognize him for, such as Tatood Lady,the title number from Calling Card, or Im Not Awake Yet from Deuce.There are also fine moments from later in his career as well, such asKickback City from Defender and Bad Penny from Top Priority (thoughit would have been better if the compilers had picked Philby orFollow Me.) Sinner Boy is here from Tastes Live at the Isle ofWight, along with Whats Goin On (not the Marvin Gaye tune). Whilefans may quibble about individual selections, the only glaring omissionis the absence of the stellar Walk on Hot Coals. The package is fineenough with numerous autobiographical quotes from Gallagher, a slew ofgood photos, and a good liner essay by David Sinclair. While it may bethe tried and true devotees that seek this out ultimately, the musiclistener who would most benefit is the one interested in the evolutionof blues or in fine guitar players. For the latter, Big Guns would benothing short of a revelation.--by Thom Jurek

Guns N' Roses (sometimes abbreviated as G N' R or GnR) is an American hard rock band, formed in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, in 1985. The band has released six studio albums, three EPs, and one live album. The classic original lineup, as signed to Geffen records, consisted of lead vocalist Axl Rose, lead guitarist Slash, rhythm guitarist Izzy Stradlin, bassist Duff McKagan and drummer Steven Adler. Co-founder Axl Rose is the only current original member of Guns N' Roses.

The band has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide,[8] including shipments of 45 million in the United States.[9] The band's 1987 major label debut album, Appetite for Destruction, has sold in excess of 28 million copies worldwide and reached No. 1 on the US Billboard 200 and is also the highest selling debut album of all time in the US. In addition, the album charted three Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, including "Sweet Child o' Mine" which reached No. 1.[10] Appetite was followed by the eight-song album G N' R Lies in 1988. The 1991 albums Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II debuted on the two highest spots on the Billboard 200 and have sold a combined 14 million copies in the United States alone and 35 million worldwide. An album of covers titled "The Spaghetti Incident?" was the last album that featured Slash, Duff, and Sorum. After over a decade of work and many lineup changes, the band released their follow-up album, Chinese Democracy, which debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and was certified platinum in the United States.

The current lineup comprises lead vocalist and pianist Axl Rose, lead guitarists Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal and DJ Ashba, rhythm guitarist Richard Fortus, bassist Tommy Stinson, keyboardists and backing vocalists Dizzy Reed and Chris Pitman and drummer Frank Ferrer.

Guns N' Roses' mid-to-late 1980s and early 1990s years have been described by individuals in the music industry as the period in which "they brought forth a hedonistic rebelliousness and revived the punk attitude-driven hard rock scene, reminiscent of the early Rolling Stones."[11]
