This is a good starting point for anyone wishing to investigate Lou Reed's career. It includes his early hit Walk On The Wild Side plus mesmerising versions of Sweet Jane and White Light/White Heat and the tracks come from albums as diverse as Berlin, Transformer, Sally Can't Dance and Coney Island Baby. It's a greart selection of songs, my favourites being Satellite Of Love (why wasn't this one a huge hit single?), the campy New York Telephone Conversation and the aforementioned. Melodic, acidic and original, this is the very best of early Lou Reed.

The career of Lou Reed defies capsule summarization. Like David Bowie (whom Reed directly inspired in many ways), he has made over his image many times, mutating from theatrical glam rocker to scary-looking junkie to avant-garde noiseman to straight rock & roller to your average guy. A firmer grasp of rock's earthier qualities has ensured a more consistent career path than Bowie's, particularly in his latter years. Yet his catalog is extremely inconsistent, in both quality and stylistic orientation. Liking one Lou Reed LP, or several, or all of the ones he did in a particular era, is no guarantee that you'll like all of them, or even most of them. Few would deny Reed's immense importance and considerable achievements, however. As has often been written, he expanded the vocabulary of rock & roll lyrics into the previously forbidden territory of kinky sex, drug use (and abuse), decadence, transvestites, homosexuality, and suicidal depression.

The Lou Levy Trio - A Most Musical Fella (1957)

A strong mid 50s trio outing from west coast pianist Lou Levy recorded under the supervision of Shorty Rogers during his time working with RCA! The set's got a harder swinging edge than you might expect and grooves in the manner of some of Levy's other fine mid 50s work thanks to excellent accompaniment from Max Bennett on bass and Stan Levy on drums. Lou's work on the keys really pushes things nicely hitting some unexpected gutbuckety tones, and working with a bluesy undercurrent that's a far cry from his west coast roots.
